Biggest Mistake After Miscarriage

Today I want to talk about one big mistake that I see a lot of women making after they’ve suffered a miscarriage.  So, this big mistake that I see a lot of women making after a miscarriage is something that I don’t think a lot of you think about. I don’t think a lot of you think about it because it actually highlights a huge difference between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. Chinese and Western Medicine treat miscarriages very differently.

 Before I get into this a little more though I want to make sure you know something really important. If you’ve suffered a miscarriage whether it’s a chemical pregnancy, early miscarriage, late term miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, I need you to know that it’s not your fault. This topic is really hard to talk about because after you suffer a loss it’s really hard not to blame yourself. I just wanted to make sure before we talked more about today’s topic that if you’ve had a miscarriage please know it’s nothing you did and please don’t blame yourself.

 The big mistake that I see women make after a miscarriage is that they do not give themselves time to reset and recover. Now, what do I mean by that? From a Western Medicine perspective I think it’s approached sometimes like, if you’ve suffered a miscarriage, it’s a miscarriage, oh well. A lot of doctors sometimes have this attitude that a miscarriage is just bad luck because 25 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Chinese Medicine sees a miscarriage in such a different way. No matter which type of loss you’ve suffered your body will treat it as a full term pregnancy. This is a very important concept to understand. It means that the amount of energy toll that the miscarriage has taken on the body is the same as if you’ve had a full term pregnancy and had child birth. I know that this is a really hard concept to wrap your head around. I’ll explain further.

 If you’ve suffered a loss, especially one that was very early on you may feel completely normal. You might feel like you want to get back to normal as quickly as you possibly can and start trying to conceive again. There are a couple of things I see happening. Number one is I see some women say screw it I really just need to exercise the pain away. So a lot of women will think you know what none of the things that I did helped, I still had a miscarriage, so I’m just going to go back to doing all of the things I’m not supposed to do specifically exercise. Women will jump back into an exercise routine as a way to escape or as a form of stress relief. Exercising right away is not the best thing to do for your body. I don’t know you remember but I’ve talked about before how in China everyone takes child birth super seriously. I don’t mean that in the United States people don’t take it seriously but in China the recovery process after you’ve had a child is very important. We recognize especially in Chinese culture and Chinese Medicine that child birth is a life altering event. The amount of energy drain that child birth has on the body is tremendous. You need to take time to rest and properly restore your body, recover and prepare yourself for whatever next steps are to come.

 Aside from exercising too soon after a miscarriage I see that a lot of women that just do not rest. They don’t rest and want to get back to their normal routine. But here’s the thing, after a miscarriage you have to take the time to rest your body and recover in order to properly prepare for the next pregnancy. Exercising or over exercising can really send your body the wrong signals. Think about it, even if it only lasted a few days or a few weeks your body just had a pregnancy. With that pregnancy your kidney energy depleted it’s savings a little bit and your body is seeing it as you just had a child.

It’s really super important for us to take the time to nourish the energy back or at least a little bit. Because as you know, we can’t really fully recover all of the energy that was lost but we can prevent it from depleting even quicker.

 You just had a miscarriage, what should you do? Remember, it doesn’t matter what kind of miscarriage you’ve suffered just take a month off. It’s ok to not want to do anything and be a couch potato. I want you to REST. Even if it’s just a chemical pregnancy. You need to rest your body and take the time to do all the things you need to do to prepare for your next pregnancy.

I know some of you are thinking…

 “I’ve heard that you’re super fertile right after a miscarriage.”

I’m not saying to take the month off from trying to conceive. Just take that month to rest and recover. This doesn’t mean though, that you can’t get pregnant during this month of rest. I think that those two things can happen concurrently. I don’t want you to feel like I’m saying don’t try again. I’m saying you can try again while you’re recovering.

            Special circumstances where you really do need to take a               

            month off of TTC:

•    If you’ve had an ectopic pregnancy - I recommend taking a couple of cycles off so that your body can get used to the new structure of your body if you’ve lost a tube.

•   If you’ve taken medication to dissolve the embryo you need to make sure that this medication is out of your system before starting TTC again

•   If you’ve had a DNC or late term miscarriage because with these circumstances you need to take more time to recover

To wrap up, I wanted to highlight today the big mistake I see a lot of women making which is that they just don’t take the time to rest. They don’t take the time to nourish their bodies and just want everything back to normal including exercising. But your body really does need to take the time to heal.
